Just when Orlove posted !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of the Corolla WRC yesterday, Toyota has been testing their Yaris prototype in Sardinia.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Why Sardinia? Well, it's an easy way to find out about the car's pace, as they were running a few WRC stages and compared their times to what the competitors did during the actual Rally Italy.
It's not the first test they did, and it was reported that the Yaris was surprisingly quick for what is the car equivalent of a toe in WRC water. There's no info on the pace from this test session, but reliability was good, with only minor gearbox and driveshaft problems.
All of that makes me think of the car as a rather sophisticated project. During the Le Mans coverage the TMG boss confirmed that a lot of work is being done on the 1.6L turbo engine, and with the chassis being rather good a WRC entry could become reality sooner. Maybe not next year, but 2016 sounds likely.
Anyhow, we will see Toyota make a comeback to rally racing 2015 with the return of RWD: the GT86 RC3 car is about to be finished and it is scheduled to run as a demo car in the Rally Germany.

As someone who tries to like Toyota and DDs a Corolla ( 5MT Diesel hatch! ), I agree.
I loved the Corolla WRC with the Castrol livery, and I find it sad that such a thing no longer exists to represent Toyota.
Godspeed!

We already know the Yaris is a great rally car...
